McEWEN NATURE RESERVE PUBLIC HIKE - Saturday May 30, 2015

A guided hike of the McEwen Nature Reserve in Hope Township has been arranged for Saturday, May 30, 2015. The hike guides will discuss the April 2014 and the recent April, 2015 prescribed burns on the north and south fields of the Nature Reserve as well as other features of the reserve. The beneficial effects of prescribed burns on this habitat should be clearly apparent. You can also expect to see nesting Tree Swallows and Eastern Bluebirds. Many other grassland and forest edge species will be present.

Meet at the corner of Walker Rd. and 10th Line at 9 am. The hike will continue until 12 noon and is about 5 km long. The hike is easy to medium in difficulty but is not accessible. The hike will go rain or shine and refreshments and snacks will be provided. Please wear appropriate footwear, bug protection, poison ivy protection and a hat. No dogs please due to ground nesting birds.

This guided tour is supported by the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation and the Rice Lake Plains Joint Initiative. Your guides for the day will be Val Deziel of The Nature Conservancy of Canada and David Geale of Tanager Tours. The beneficial effects of prescribed burn on this habitat should be clearly apparent. You can also expect to see nesting Tree Swallows and Eastern Bluebirds. Many other grassland and forest edge species will be present.

McEWEN NATURE RESERVE WORK PARTY - Wednesday June 3, 2015

PELTON NATURE RESERVE PUBLIC HIKE - Saturday June 13, 2015

On June 13, 2015 the Northumberland land trust will conduct a public hike to the Pelton Nature Reserve to view the property and to check on the pine and spruce plantings of the last few years. Meet at the Peter's Wood's Nature Reserve parking lot at 9:00 am. To reach the Pelton Nature Reserve there is a 20 min walk through agricultural fields, and the Nature Conservancy of Canada's newly acquired reserve. Depending on conditions the hike will go to the wetlands, to the East boundary, to the North boundary and return. It will take approximately two hours to complete the hike. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - MONDAY JUNE 15, 2015

The Annual Meeting of the Northumberland Land Trust will be held at Palisade Gardens Retirement Residence, 240 Chapel St at D'Arcy St, Cobourg. The doors open at 7:00 pm with light refreshments and the meeting will begin at 7:30 pm.

Our presenter for the evening will be Ben Walters.

The title of Ben's presentation is "The evolution of the Northumberland County Forest". He will move us through the history of Ontario's Agreement forests and how, as one of those forests, the Northumberland County Forest has gone from "wastelands" to the amazing public asset that it is today.

Ben Walters passes on his formidable knowledge to summer students.

Ben has been the Forest Manager for Northumberland County for the past three years. Prior to that he prepared management plans for NLT properties and has worked on species-at-risk, protected areas management and bird research related projects throughout much of Ontario and in the U.S.  Ben has a Masters degree from Trent University studying the effects of recreational trails on birds and is currently a PhD candidate at Trent University studying forest bird ecology. He also holds Diplomas from Sir Sandford Fleming in Ecosystem Management as well as Parks and Forest Recreation. Ben enjoys hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing.
